Poor performance in the academic environment can be emotionally devastating to the student that prides themselves on academic accomplishment. For the student that has not
done well in math since high school feelings of failure are common. Students that are pursuing college, after all, are most often doing so because the have a goal
in mind. While only a small percentage of them intend to pursue mathematics as a profession, most of them are confronted with certain prerequisites in mathematics if they are
to complete their degree program. Poor academic performance in the first years of college is not that uncommon. To some
degree this problem can be related to the teaching environment itself. The college environment, after all, is most often very different from the high school environment these students just
left. In most cases they no longer have a teacher to hold their hand to make sure that they are progressing at the rate that they need to be
progressing. The old days of fifteen or twenty students to a classroom have been replaced by days filled with auditorium gorged with students, days with one solitary teacher standing
well off in the distance addressing the class over a microphone and detailing how to work a problem on overhead screens. The presentation may be, in part, unintelligible either due
to the poor speaking skills of the teacher, malfunctioning electronics, or perhaps even as a result of a strong foreign accent the teacher might have. Other college classrooms are
strictly Internet based and there is no physical contact with a teacher whatsoever. Syllabi are incomplete and expectations are vague at the very best.
