Obviously, and emphasis on the "greater good" must be a directing factor in deciding how to utilize the knowledge that is emerging from this research. From a personal perspective, however, that "greater good" takes on somewhat different connotation than it might from a more rigid approach. Stem cell research has opened up a myriad of possibilities in terms of medicine and the quality of life in general. Stem cells have the potential of developing into any type of cell. They have the potential to either remain a generalized cell or to take on specialized function. Consequently, work with stem cells has the potential to be of tremendous value to humanity as a whole. Indeed, stem cell research is one of the most promising developments of the last few decades in terms of the hope it provides for improved health to the worlds population. It has the potential to impact the face of medicine across all cultures and across all geographic boundaries. The controversy surrounding stem cell transplantation is rooted in the fact that stem cells must be harvested from human beings. This is true whether we are considering embryonic stem cells, umbilical cord stem cells, peripheral blood stem cells or bone marrow stem cells.
