As a result of the parents concentration on bourgeois ideals rather than the needs of their children, only a few of the adolescents succeed in becoming adults-most of them commit suicide. Wedekinds intent was to attack the bourgeois ideals of his society, and show the grotesque ending to young lives because of societys failure to discuss the subject of sex openly. This revolutionary play and its subject matters-teen pregnancy, sexual experimentation, denial, and teen suicide-was visionary and no less important to the ongoing bourgeois society (moral majority) who tell their children today to just ignore their sexual feelings and theyll go away. Frank Wedekinds first play, Fr?hlings Erwachen (1891; Springs Awakening), was censored because of the subject matter-teen pregnancy, eroticism, sexual promiscuity and sexual experimentation. Finally, it was banned for the most grotesque ending to its story-the subject of teen suicide-because of the inability of the young adults advisors to consider their children as anything other than objects upon which to issue punishment rather than knowledge. In the play, Moritz, Melchior and the other boys search desperately for sexual knowledge because of their sexual arousal when around the girls. In erotic scenes, the researcher will note, Wedekind plays out the boys attractions and fantasies about their sexual attractions. In their confusion about the differences between what they are feeling and what they have been taught about sex, they seek answers, but are rebuffed. At the same time that they are rebuffed and punished by their parents and teachers, the boys recognize the fact that at least in commerce, they are supposed to take advantage of vulnerability in the world at large.
