Both sociological and psychological theories suggest a correlation between early childhood experiences, personal identification and the development of a criminal persona, and this viewpoint has been applied to assessing particular characteristics related to the choice of prostitution as a criminal career. In assessing prostitution both as a profession and as a form of deviant behavior, it is beneficial to look at more than one sociological theory, including functionalism, conflict and symbolic interactionism. Functionalism Functionalists, like Durkheim, have recognized that because deviance exists in every society, there must be a functional element to its existence. Society and social views are shaped by a given set of norms and the belief that most of the people in that society accept those norms as a part of their culture. Deviance, then, is the act of nonconformity relative to those norms. Functionalism, then, relates the belief that deviance is systematic, universal and persistent, and results from a system of needs. Prostitution, then, from a functionalist perspective, can be understood relative to the needs of the individual and to the systematic nature of deviance in a culture. The Western social culture defines certain sexual acts as normative. Sexual acts, though, in exchange for money and in the absence of an existing social relationship is deviant in comparison with the normative culture. But prostitutes pursue this deviant behavior because they seek to meet their needs within the culture, and provide a means of meeting the needs of others.
