Private Counseling There are many situations and types of situations in which an individual or family may seek the services of a counselor whose background and credentials lay in social work. Whereas a psychologist is more likely to focus on the individual, his feelings and perspectives, the social worker is likely to add to the mix a variety of practical items and choices available to the client. The private counselor might offer vocational options, aptitude testing or referral to various public services. Child Protective Services Law enforcement or health care providers often are the impetus that gains the involvement of social workers in this area. Others may become involved with individual cases in response to reports by a teacher, neighbor or other individual. The goal of child welfare services is to provide an array of prevention and intervention services to children and families, particularly children who have been or are at risk of abuse or neglect; children with special medical or mental health needs; delinquent children; and children who do not have adult caregivers (NASW Standards for Social Work Practice in Child Welfare, 2005; p. 5).
