Now, theres a new trend. But just how big is this type of business where buying and selling is done, for the most part, on computer terminals? It is predicted that a quarter of all US business-to-business purchasing will be done online by the year 2003 ("One Quarter" PG). At a congressional hearing, it was noted that e-commerce is indeed changing the world ("Electronic" PG). And e-commerce is being used in innovative ways to increase business by some companies ("Electronic Commerce: Telecoms" PG). It was also noted at the congressional hearing, that the ability to do business over digital networks had already begun to transform the way Americans work, learn, shop and play ("Electronic" PG).And the transformation is expected to become even more important early in the twenty-first century (PG). While it seems as if the growth of the industry will enhance business and make life easier for many, what if any social changes will come out of it? A student writing on this topic will want to include a variety of prospective changes. One social change would be that people are meeting both friends and romantic interests online and this is a direct result of the growth of e-commerce.
