concept that refers to the social organization of a particular culture that dictates the relationship between the sexes. Every culture includes fundamental assumptions about the basic nature of men and
women and these assumptions establish the norms of behavior for the sexes within that society. However, these gender roles are social constructs, rather than biologically determined realities and, therefore, their
precepts, such as a womens place in society being confined to the domestic sphere, have been challenged successfully in Western society. The success of the womens movement demonstrates why
gender is a significant and important topic for study. This is shown by the fact that the involvement of women in the work force benefits every developed society. The talents,
intelligence and skill of half of the human race was relegated to and confined within the domestic sphere for most of human history based on gender assumptions that have proven
not to be unfounded. For example, the Victorian idea that women were too weak, frail and vulnerable to face life in the public sphere has been shown to be completely
foolish and patriarchal nonsense. By studying gender, researchers can discern how modern conceptualizations about gender are currently influencing behavior and communication between the sexes. This is particularly important since
rapid social changes are increasingly affecting work patterns and families, as many families feature dual income couple as women enter the work force in increasing numbers. Gender roles and expectations
greatly affect communications between couples and the way in which they handle associated stress. A study conducted by Wallace and Jovanovic (2011) revealed that men generally receive more emotional support
