a condition wherein one company owns the rights to all things that have to do with their product or service. For example, not so long ago there was only one phone company, Bell, and not the amount of companies one sees today. With that in mind the following paper offers a summary and reaction to the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890. Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890 "The Sherman Antitrust Act, formally known as the Act of July 2, 1890...was the first United States federal government action to limit monopolies" (Wikipedia, 2006). The act states that, "Every contract, combination in the form of trust or otherwise, or conspiracy, in restraint of trade or commerce among the several States, or with foreign nations, is declared to be illegal" (Wikipedia, 2006). And, anyone who does engage in such behavior will be charged with a felony (Wikipedia, 2006). Although this act was not really used for some time, there came a time when Roosevelt used it in order to divide the Northern Securities Company and the Taft utilized it to split up the American Tobacco Company (Wikipedia, 2006). Clearly the act was not really limited to trust companies but companies that somehow involved a level of a the trust companies through trade issues (Wikipedia, 2006). It involved an intention of preventing "arrangements designed to, or which tend to, increase the cost of goods to the consumer. It was not specifically intended to prevent the dominance of an industry by a specific company, despite misconceptions to the contrary" (Wikipedia, 2006).
