advent in 1981, MTV has spawned a generation of devotees who cannot imagine music without accompanying videos, which provide interpretative images for their viewers. Unfortunately, however, these are only the images according to the directors of the music videos. This doesnt necessarily mean that music itself evokes any kind of image. Before delving into this topic in greater detail, it would be helpful to consider what an image is. An image has been defined as representation or a "mental picture." It is an impression which a person forms of another person, object, or a formless concept. Images are elusive to characterize, because they can vary with the individual. A persons cultural and familial upbringing, education and socioeconomic status contribute to his interpretation of images. As for music, it is heard everywhere, and has been a definitive component of culture for centuries. It is regarded as more than an assemblage of notes, but as a unique "language of emotion" (Eldred qvrprop2.html). But does the mind actually translate pleasing musical sounds into symbolic images which may influence his behavior within society, as well as his understanding of himself and his relationships with others? Philosophy has long wrestled with the question of whether or not music evokes images which have a significant impact upon mans conduct, in terms of virtue and morality. There is an old saying, "Music soothes the savage breast," and philosophers in both the East and West have long attempted to determine the origin of this calming influence. Confucius was one of the earliest philosophers to consider the power of music, and determined that it had a positive influence upon man. He believed the music evoked images of harmony, which encouraged an orderly society (Dawson PG). ...
