Giltman 4/2010 Please Sex education in American schools has been a topic of controversy ever since it was first implemented into the curriculum. Some people argue that sex education has no place in the classroom and should only be taught by parents and religious leaders. Others take the more liberal approach claiming that educating a child on sex can enhance his or her understanding of sexually transmitted diseases, safe sex and the benefits of abstinence. In addition, as teenage pregnancy rates continue to rise in America, proponents are strongly urging that sex education continue to be part of the curriculum to help promote awareness. However, many of them are taking it a step further by saying that the curriculum should only focus on the benefits of abstinence rather than a comprehensive sexual education program. Since sex education was first taught in the school systems, policymakers have gone back and forth about whether to keep it an abstinence-only education or whether to make it comprehensive where all aspects of sex are taught. For the most part, comprehensive and abstinence only are the only two forms of sex education taught in America.
