This, however, is not the limit of the history of Chinese art as figure painting has always been a very powerful form of expression in Chinas history. The following paper examines the origins and development of Chinese secular figure painting. Secular Figure Painting in China Figure painting first appears in Chinese history back in the Neolithic era (Chu-Griffis Asian Art Collection, 2005). It first shows up on pottery and then moves on to tiles and then the walls of tombs and caves and family shrines (Chu-Griffis Asian Art Collection, 2005). The more recognizable Chinese art in the form of landscapes and animals came much later in the history of China (Chu-Griffis Asian Art Collection, 2005). And, for the most part many of the figure paintings had to do with moral and ethical principles that were to pass along ideals to the people. However, secular painting was also a very powerful form of the figure painting in China. At the same time it should perhaps be understood that "Chinese painting is based on Confucian ethical teachings, advocating morality and propriety" (Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, 2005). As such all paintings, beginning with the Dunhuang period, have some elements that speak of a religious content, even when depicting secular forms. This can, in a more detailed research, be seen in the style of painting, the types of brushstrokes, the colors used, and many other elements that speak of a spirituality that exists outside the subject material of a particular painting.
