The question Hoggart addresses is how individuals from working class families integrate their origins with the experiences they have in a school with higher standards. have shown themselves to be especially intelligent may be so fortunate as to be awarded a scholarship to a school that requires more intellectual ability than is required in public schools. Hoggart describes Scholarship Boy as not quite fitting in with academic peers but he also no longer fits in with his working-class family and friends. Hoggart is referring to the old Grammar School but the consequence is true today. Youngsters from lower income families are awarded scholarships to the so-called ivy-league universities. In fact, they may well have been awarded a scholarship to a private high school. How does one integrate the two worlds - the ivy-league education and the working class background? There are numerous obstacles these individuals face, such as having those from the original class perceiving the individual as being uppity or too good for them. At the same time, this scholarship boy must face other students who are far better dressed, who have a very different set of manners and a different set of values. The scholarship boy stands out from these academic peers. This is a prevalent situation in even todays world. In fact, a young adult from a lower working class family may face ridicule from even his or her family for trying to improve himself. Hoggart also addresses the working class who have taught themselves so as to improve their place in society. They may have moved from what would be called the working class to a middle class job through their own self-improvement efforts. These individuals, according to Hoggart, begin to be embarrassed about their origins, they are likely to feel and act superior to those who exhibit working class manners and behaviors.
