Tokugawa shogunate, established around 1600 tightened the laws and established a sense of order, via class systems in Japan. The rigid, imposed structure served to close the country to foreign trade and gain by way of seclusion. When the country finally reentered the foreign market 250 years later, its inhabitants were well versed in their assigned skills and duties because of economic success. While the rules were steadfast through most of this period, there were exceptions. Over time, rules loosened and the country, making one last attempt in 1853 to reestablish the glory of the Tokugawa shogunate, finally gave way by the end of the century to western culture. The samurai, as a class and as individuals, were influential in these changes. "The trend towards a hierarchically-structured closed society was successfully carried through by the Tokugawa Shogunate during the first half century of the Edo period" in the early 1600s (Schooler 37). As the Shoguns Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Tokugawa Ieyasu gained military control, they ensured their military dominance by establishing a social order. Toyotomi Hideyoshi wrote out the legal procedures, which were carried out by Tokugawa Ieyasu. The legal procedures specified that power was held by land holders. The shoguns and the samurai were included in this group. The merchant class, the artisans and the daimyo (eta) were used to work the land and crafts to turn them into money for the ruling classes.
