In todays ever-liberal society, homosexual relationships have been more and more a part of the mainstream, inasmuch as gays and lesbians are feeling more comfortable about their sexual orientation. Clearly, their viewpoint states that the concept of two people of the same sex maintaining an intimate relationship is not the way coupling was intended; men and women create a pair, not men with men or women with women. It is simply an inappropriate arrangement, they say -- teetering heavily on the immoral side, as well -- to indulge in a same-sex marriage. The traditional definition of marriage states it to be a union of two people of the opposite sex. Given this interpretation, opposition to legal gay/lesbian relationships contends that same-sex marriages do not fall into the traditional category of accepted matrimony. However, it is clear to see how the standard definition is discriminatory -- that marriage is the bringing together of two people who love each other, no matter their gender. "Social fragmentation and the myriad configurations of modern families have presented us with new problems and complexities that cannot be solved by idealizing the past" (Anonymous, 1996, p. PG). It is becoming more and more apparent that the bonds of love go just as deep as heterosexual bonds; in fact, homosexual couples are just like anyone else as far as their devotion and commitment to the vows of marriage. It does not take both male and female genitalia to create a loving, devoted relationship; rather, all it requires is the commitment from two people -- gender notwithstanding -- who have each others best interests at heart. From that point on, it does not matter if the couple reflects two men or two women. ...
