immediately caught up in the drama which takes place within less than a week. We are told from the beginning that the two lovers will die, but we too
want to tempt Fate. We want to believe that somehow they will not die, and we watch carefully for clues that our wish may come true (Mixon ppg).
Romeo and his friends are on the way to a masked ball. Mercutio urges them to hurry: "come we burn daylight..." (I
iv l 43) ...we waste our lights in vain, like lamps by day (I iv l 46). Fate seems to be going along at a good clip and then
stops for a moment when Romeo says, "I dreamt a dream tonight ... (I iv l 50) ...for my mind misgives some consequence, yet hanging in the stars, shall
bitterly begin his fearful date with this nights revels and expire the term of a despised life, closed in my breast, by some vile forfeit of untimely death" (I iv
l 106-8). The audience sighs - they know, as do we, that Fate is on the march again. As the play
progress, the use of word-play reiterates what is fated, and even though we might wish to change the outcome of fate, we begin to notice, it may not happen. The
famous balcony scene has concluded and Romeo has told Juliet that he would be her pet (bird). She replies: "...Yet I should kill thee with much cherishing" (II
ii 184). We see the Friar out gathering herbs, and says, "The earth thats natures mother is her tomb, what is her burying grave, that is her womb; "
