In all honesty, good enthralling stories such as "Romeo and Juliet" are successful because they contain conflict and turmoil and depth. People do not generally desire to read stories or see plays that are happy and dull, but rather stories with conflict that encourages the audience to think about many different realities. The following paper examines "Romeo and Juliet" as it relates to conflict, characterization, and concepts. Conflict The central conflict in this play takes place between two powerful houses, the Capulets and the Montagues. They have a long standing feud which has been going on for perhaps generations. Romeo is of the Montague house and Juliet of the Capulet house. They meet and fall in love without really even understanding they are from the differing sides of the feuding family. There seems to be no solid reason why the families are feuding but it exist and even the town is involved, with people being required to side with one family or the other. It is a pointless conflict that has no foundation, but one that is long lived and very volatile for no apparent reason. The conflict, in other words, has no real foundation but it is tradition. The lovers marry, although Juliet is to be married to a different individual whom her parents have approved. The tensions rise and in order to find a way to be together Juliet takes a poison of sorts that will make it look like she is dead. Romeo has no knowledge of this and thinks she has died. He kills himself and when Juliet awakens ...
