Orsis The Madonna Of 115th Street : Faith and Community in Italian Harlem, 1880-1950 eloquently illustrates how the psychological characteristics of the Italian/American population - which include their value systems and religion - are wide and varied. They are a fun-loving people who take much joy from life. Their primary focus is upon their family relationships, which they deem to be the most important facet of their lives. Honor and family go hand in hand with the Italians, and they do not tolerate anything less than absolute loyalty to both. As well, they are particularly adept at making things happen for themselves, even when the odds are not in their favor. Being people of great faith in their religion, they rely upon its influence to see them through difficult times. This strength allows them to overcome obstacles others may not be able to do. One of Orsis main focuses is that family is of utmost importance to the Italian heritage. Each generation represents years of respect, admiration and power that are ultimately passed down to the next and then the next. The father outwardly rules the family, but the mother has just as strong an influence over the children. They are a respectful people in that they treat each other with great honor and compassion. Not afraid to show affection, the Italians are always hugging and kissing as a way of demonstrating their loyal devotion to friends and family. One does not feel alone ...
