Owners often fail to consider how important regular vaccinations and veterinary visits are to the pets wellbeing, inasmuch as taking the preventative approach to an animals health means keeping that dog or cat from becoming sick in the first place; not only does this save the owner money by avoiding expensive treatment, but it also avoids the animal having to endure the pain and suffering inherent to illness. Moreover, some owners do not find it necessary to see the vet even after the pet is sick or injured, forcing the dog or cat to endure unnecessary and inhumane suffering without benefit of diagnosis, treatment or medication. This failure to provide basic care is, in many states, an illegal act of neglect that brings with it various levels of punishment depending upon where the pet owner lives. Preparing the home so that dogs and cats cannot wreak havoc when the humans are gone is a particularly important aspect of responsible pet ownership, because it once again acts as a preventive measure against accidents or injuries for the animals, damaged household items or furniture and tremendous frustration. Even the most trustworthy pets can get into mischief if left alone, a behavior that occurs for one of three reasons: 1) the pet has not been properly trained; 2) the pet is bored from lack of mental and physical stimulation (usually because owners are gone far too long); and 3) the pet should was not contained in a crate.
