to consider which is likely to be the most suitable philosophical approach. The concept of post positivistic research paradigms is argued as presenting a paradigm which is in denial
of positivism, and is also, in some texts, referred to as non positivism (McGregor and Murnane, 2010). Interestingly, Ponterotto (2005) places this approach as one that was within the positivism
paradigm, but this appears to be a minority view. The majority of literature places positivism in the empirical methodology school and the post positivistic approach as a paradigm that incorporates
critical and interpretive methods (McGregor and Murnane, 2010). Within this approach to research it is assumed that there are numerous approaches to research, meaning that it is not limited to
scientific methods, making it a broad approach, so rather than simply creating and then testing an hypothesise this is an approach where there would be the ability to generate hypothesis
as a result inductive reasoning (McGregor and Murnane, 2010). The approach is one that postulates theory and practice cannot be separated, and that the research will be able to look
at not only how something may be observed, but to interpret why a phenomenon occurs or to look at issues such as the relationship of power structures (McGregor and Murnane,
2010). It is also an approach which is assumed to incorporate values and bias, with the researchers central to the process. This is an approach methodology that is highly suited
to social research where observations may be made within natural settings, and not with the use of experimental design, as the aim is to identify trends and patterns, an interesting
