In the case of assessing cars in terms of their weight and the miles per gallon that they will achieve it is necessary that the analysis can be seen as both reliable and valid. These may be seen as challenges and may be present in the way that the research is undertaken; the research needs to be seen as objective and without bias. The data that is collected is not subject to opinion as it is factual data concerning the weight of a vehicle and its fuel efficiency. For the research to be seen as valid, and for it to be repeatable it is essential that the sample chosen for analysis is representative of the population as a whole. There is the potential for bias in the way that the sample is chosen, in order to overcome this there is a system needed that will take out the potential for bias with a specific sampling technique. The use of sampling was undertaken with a set sample pattern, selecting the vehicle on every 5th page, starting at page 40 of the book, this took away any potential for the researcher to try and use personal judgement. The size of the sampling also had to be considered, to make sure that there was a data size sufficient to give reliable results.
