in full swing, basically ignored the impact of racism on the constructs of the movement. Because there was a general perception during Feminisms inception that black women were black first and women second, the movement itself fed the perception of a lack of need for support for women of color outside of the existing racially-based movement. Though activists within the Feminist Movement didnt actually speak out in condemnation of women of color, their lack of overall concern for a very large segment of the American population negated any positive efforts that were made to unite women of color with feminist ideologies. At the same time, while the Feminist Movement was supporting changes in the media perceptions of women and promoting a greater level of perceived independence, the transformation of the American perception appeared to lack a focus on the same type of change for women of color. The very outward appearance of the Feminist Movement, which culminated in images of writers, editors and public figures like Gloria Steinem and Helen Girlie Brown only underscored the lack of women of color in the movement. Black and Latino representatives of Feminism were not only hard to perceive from a media perspective, but were almost non-existent within the development of definitive cultures. In essence, women of color became advocates for their own racially oriented struggles because of the lack of acceptance or acknowledgment from the Feminist Movement. Major examples of the strength of Black and Latino women came from their power as part of the changing ethnic focus of the country, but little effort was made within the structure of the Feminist Movement to change the perceptions that were prevalent in the American culture about the role of women of color.
