The cinchona bark-the tree from which quinine is derived-- had been discovered some time ago and was thought to have medicinal properties such as curing the fever from malaria (Le Couteur and Burreson 332). Quinine is actually called aryl aminoalcohol and has a similar chemical structure to chloroquine, quinidine, amodiaquine, halofantrine, mefloquine, piperaquine, tafenoquine, and lumefantrine (Yeka, Achan, DAlessandro and Talisuna 448). Today, parenteral quinine and two other medications are the only ones recommended by WHO for treating P falciparum malaria (Yeka, Achan, DAlessandro and Talisuna 448). The substance has other uses as well. Quinine is considered to be a base substance, but it is a rather weak one at that (American Pharmaceutical Association 925). Quinine itself is actually a derivative of the quinoline molecule (Le Couteur and Burreson 338). Again, it has been known to help treat malaria. At the same time, synthetic derivatives were found during the 1930s to treat malaria too(Le Couteur and Burreson 338). Quinine is a well-known substance but not widely used. It is commonly known as a substance that exists in a mixer to be used with gin, but it is not something that has a lot of uses. Again, it has historically been associated with the treatment of malaria. As a substance, how does quinine chemically react? Quinine reacts in different ways at different times and in different circumstances. When heated with KOH for example, a green or yellow green color emerges (American Pharmaceutical Association 925). If an alkaloid is mixed in, the color is enhanced (American Pharmaceutical Association 925). When mixed with HNO3, a brownish or yellow color comes through (American Pharmaceutical Association 925). Quinine that is chemically pure will react as an alkaline when placed with phenolphthalein and a red color is also produced (American Pharmaceutical Association 925). ...
