In demonstrating accountability, people, as individuals and as members of professions and communities, are called on to demonstrate accountability and be responsible for their behavior on a number of levels. Self : The first level of accountability is to ones self. Taking responsibility for ones actions in regards to the self means taking time to nurture the self, that is, taking time from work for leisure, family and the activities that nurture the soul rather than the pocketbook. Being accountable to oneself also means taking care of oneself: not smoking, getting both exercise and enough sleep, and eating right. Client : As accountability branches away from the self and towards society, it encompasses the ethical obligations that encompass how professionals treat others. These ethical standards are often formalized in ethical codes. For instance, the National Organization of Human Services (NOHS) lists nine obligations that social workers owe their clients. These include being advocate for clients; respecting client integrity and welfare; protecting the best interests of the client; etc. (NOHS). Employer : Accountability to an employer includes being cognizant of all local, state and federal laws so that professional behavior is at all times within the framework of moral and legal standards (NOHS). Being accountable to an employer also means consistently trying to achieve the goals and mission outlined by that employer. Responsible, accountable behavior towards an employer frequently coincides with behavior that defines professionalism. Profession : Each profession, such as the NOHS code of ethics, typically outlines the parameters of behavior that is expected from practitioners.
