Although each is an independent body, they collaborate with each other and they acknowledge each others accreditation. While the evaluation is performed by a regional agency, it results in national accreditation (The Higher Learning Commission, 2003). National associations focus on schools dedicated to specific purposes, such as technical schools or religious schools. Institutional accreditation evaluations look at the educational activities and also on "such things as governance and administration, financial stability, admissions and student services, institutional resources, student learning, institutional effectiveness, and relationships with internal and external constituencies" (The Higher Learning Commission, 2003). 2. Specialized accreditation. This is a less broad evaluation looking only at identified units, programs or schools within the institution. Also referred to as program accreditation, this accreditation process is often associated with national professional associations, such as associations for engineering, law, or medicine. The specialized accreditation may also focus on a specific discipline, such as psychology, social work, business, or teacher education (The Higher Learning Commission, 2003; Online Education Resources, n.d.).
