which was founded by Lillian Wald and Mary Brewster, who began aiding the sick among the poor in their homes in 1893 (Day and Stanhope). When Wald and Brewster began
their work there were no public health nurses in the city of New York, but a handful of agencies, the majority of which were private, provided visiting nurses (Lillian Wald).
These public health pioneers decided early on that the nurses working at the Henry Street Settlement would nonsectarian and that fees would be charged only to those patients who had
the ability to pay (Lillian Wald). The work of the settlement captured the attention of a philanthropist, Jacob Schiff and he provided the means to expand services to
the "poor Russian Jews," who made the majority of the settlements patients. Wald was supervising 27 nurses by 1906 and by 1914, this number had grown to 100 (Lillian Wald).
The settlement, which was now called the "Nurses Settlement," collectively, these nurses treated more patients than did the three largest city hospitals of that era (Lillian Wald). As well as
offering health services, the Henry Street Settlement also became a center for the surrounding neighborhood. By 1913, it had expanded and owned nine houses, seven "vacation homes in the country
and three stores," which served as "stock rooms, milk stations, clinics," etc. (Lillian Wald). Roughly 3,000 people typically were enrolled in the settlements clubs and classes (Lillian Wald). From
1893 to 1933, Wald was the head of the Henry Street Settlement and, under her leadership, this organization gained worldwide attention (Lillian Wald). In 1902, working with Lina Rogers, Wald
