By following this eminent code, a police officer becomes a target for possible violence. Law enforcement officers go to work each day, with the knowledge that this might very well be their last day on earth. They have chosen to serve and protect, so they must face the possible dangers at every turn. Routine to them is unbelievable and the pentacle of stress to those outside the realm of law enforcement. When a law enforcement officer takes the oath to serve and protect, he/she understands what the odds are and what the potential dangers are; yet, he or she gladly takes that oath. Merely being a police officer is perceived as a stressful occupation. Over the years, law enforcement officers have been thought of in various lights. They not only serve and protect their communities; they also go above and beyond the call of duty on numerous occasions, risking life and limb to live up to that oath of service and protection. This makes law enforcement officers very vulnerable. A willingness to serve and protect carries with it a great deal of responsibility. The responsibility is not only to the community, but also to the law enforcement agency for which the officer works, and to the law enforcement officer him/herself.
