Essay / Research Paper Abstract
An 11 page paper discussing some of the difficulties of arriving at appropriate methods of providing ongoing training for teachers or even determining what constitutes "appropriate." Some theorists feel that a concentration on method prevents teachers from attaining professional status at all and has the ultimate effect of keeping them as technicians only. Even these agree that professional development is essential for any educator. The classroom necessarily is a rather closed environment with little influence from any point outside that does not originate from within the classroom. Curricula are set and many teachers have little freedom either in the content they teach or the manner in which they teach it. Finding the most advantageous mix of approaches and methods of professional development remains a challenge. Bibliography lists 12 sources.
