An irony that I found in the film was that Aristide claimed the only way to stop the drug trafficking through Haiti was to restore its democracy-- ironic
in the sense that the countrys chief drug trading partner was apparently, the C.I.A. if the democratic United States. In part, their reluctance to work with Aristide and the propaganda
to make him appear as though he were insane, were examples of their willingness to help the Haitian government (and most likely themselves as well !) prosper from the drug
trade--Quite notably a billion dollar market. What I found to be particular disturbing was that the film even asserts that the embassy has proof of
mass rapes, and they even know of people who were drafted into a death squad that was sent to kill people (usually informants) in the middle of the night. Evidently,
these horrors had been prevalent since the early 1980s and according to the film, by the 1988 it was unmistakably clear that the Haitian government was corruptly involved in the
drug trade. When the United States finally "came" to Haiti for the purpose of intervention, there was quite a bit of controversy. Haitis chief
of police, Michelle Francoism and the head of the military had both been trained in the United States and consequently had much support. U.S. soldiers freely raped 11 and
12 year old Haitian girls, afraid that the older ones might have A.I.D.S. Throughout the land, our troops created havoc and mayhem- doing virtually nothing to stop the drug
