its just time to give up this futile debate! Questions (and problems) regarding equality have not been solved. In many cases they have not even been adequately addressed. But the fact of the matter is that the decision was made and the "right" granted . . . and there is no turning back! As the United States marks the 25th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion, discussion groups looking at right-to-life versus right-to-choose issues yet again. But finally, theres a difference. The discussion groups include activists on both sides of the question and although they dont expect to reach agreement, they at least hope to gain some understanding of one another. Many longtime activists, on both sides of the issue, remain skeptical of such attempts at rapprochement, while others believe they are injecting at least an element of civility into one of the most divisive social issues in American history. Sometimes the groups go beyond talk, and launch projects on related areas where they do agree, such as reducing teen pregnancy and promoting adoption. But, participants agree, talk in and of itself is enormously valuable. A pro-choice member, may lay out his ideas on how to reduce abortion: Make it easier for people to work and have children. Enact more generous parental leave laws. Expand day care. A pro-lifer, may respond by offering her own solution: Greater dissemination of information about fetal development.
