behind what motivates entire social communities to physically and psychologically deform their women. The authors approach is somewhat pragmatic, while at the same time offering an equal balance of
personal emotion. Women in a repressive, male chauvinistic society -- such as those mentioned in Lightfoot-Kleins article -- must do what they have
to in order to survive. Unfortunately their actions, such as accepting genital circumcision, serve to reinforce the very image they seek to abandon. The issues that surround such
mutilation, as presented by the author, incorporate a combination of religious and economic aspects that serve to perpetuate such practice even in contemporary times.
The lives of women have been designed by men under religious and scientific assumptions which have served to guide every part of a womans life, including her sexuality, mannerisms,
physical appearance and education, along with her role in society. These designed programs served not only to control the female gender, but also to block entrance for women in
many areas so that they remain chained to the patriarchal influence. "The patriarchal system, which came into being when society had reached a certain stage of development and which
necessitated the imposition of one husband on the woman, whereas a man was left free to have several wives, would never have been possible or have been maintained to this
