Many critics believe that art should reflect those changes and so the authentic differs from art of the past, and should not be judged by the same generalizations (2003). More specifically, aesthetics no longer applies, and the aesthetics that applied to the past no longer represent the people of the day properly, at least according to poststructuralism (2003). It is not an easy concept to grasp. It is something that is critical of what was accepted as good or bad in the past and makes no bones about blatant honesty. According to the ideology, things are more authentic today and not glossed over such as in modernism. An example of this perhaps in terms of academic writing on the media has to do with the fact that media is no longer protected and sacred. The recent acknowledgment of the New York Times reporter who plagiarized his way through a lucrative career is an example of the facade being dispensed with. Critics were shocked at the Times boldness. Editors did not try to cover it up, or make excuses. One cannot underestimate the importance of what occurred. Leon Harris (2003) of CNN claims: " "The New York Times" plagiarism scandal still in the headlines and still causing shockwaves in journalism circles and raising questions about whether you can, or whether you should, believe everything you read" (p.PG). This can be construed as part of the poststructural revolution--or perhaps more precisely, a criticism of it-- and it is seen in the larger part of the dominant culture.
