Colonialism describes political ideologies that are generally imposed on a nation-state when another nation takes it over, such as through a military invasion (Semiotics Resource Center, 2002). The occupier imposes their own set of laws and rules on the population and most often exploits the colonys people and resources (Semiotics Resource Center, 2002). The term post-colonialism emerged from Marxist writings with the purpose of de-glorifying the generally positive attitudes towards colonization (Semiotics Resource Center, 2002). Considering the term colonization often brings to mind civilizing a nation, it does indeed have negative connotations rather than positive ones (Semiotics Resource Center, 2002). In about the middle of the 20th century, the term post-colonialism emerged "in the context of decolonization" (Semiotics Resource Center, 2002) and the term itself has been a source of controversy leading to the lack of an agreed-upon definition (Semiotics Resource Center, 2002). It continues to be a fuzzy concept even though the term has been adopted by different disciplines of study (Semiotics Resource Center, 2002). Some authors even use the term to denounce things like modernization which they view as being another form of political domination (Semiotics Resource Center, 2002). The terms colonialism and postcolonialism do not have to mean that a country or region was "colonized" by another nation. It can simply refer to political or other ideals and how they have changed. One author provides an excellent example of Tibet. For a while, Tibet was under the influence of Great Britain but then it was officially colonized by postcolonial China. The Chinese took this action at the same time the rest of the world was moving towards decolonization.
