Portugal History and Healthcare Research Compiled by 4/2011 Please Portugal has been in a constant state of demographic change for decades. This change relates to a number of factors but a particularly weighty influence has been the historic relation Portugal maintained with Africa and Brazil. The Portuguese were heavy handed rulers in these regions but they developed a distinctive Portuguese influenced culture that ultimately resulted in considerable economic impacts and immigration away from the colonized areas and into Portugal. Portugal has both suffered and benefitted from this immigration. One of the areas where this can be clearly seen is in healthcare. In Mozambique in 1953 farmers were ordered by the Portuguese rule to leave their farms so that the land could be devoted to more cotton production (Saraiva, Robertson, and Fonss, 1998). Many traveled to Portugal. Despite the fact that Portugal had maintained a presence in Africa since the fifteenth century, the countrys involvement during the 1960s and 1970s, in particular, was characterized by turbulence and counterinsurgency (Cann, 1997). The Portuguese presence was highly resented and Africans reacted with guerilla warfare (Cann, 1997). The Independence movement and the 1974 coup in Portugal would end a half a century of Fascist rule but launch a civil war in Mozambique (Saraiva, Robertson, and Fonss, 1998).
