for identifying what people know as the seven deadly sins, and he was an individual heavily responsible for much of the development and evolution of the papacy. He was also
the first monk to ever become pope. The following paper examines his life and the importance of his place in history. Pope Gregory I
"Gregory I, also known as St. Gregory or Gregory the Great, the first pope of that name and the last of the four doctors of the Latin
Church, was born in Rome about the year 540."2 His father was wealthy, a senatorial man, and the owner of many estates, while his mother Silvia was "commemorated as a
saint."3 In relationship to his early life, as a child, there is not a great deal of solid information, as is often the case with historical figures from the ancient
past. It seems evident, however, that he was of a wealthy family and thus had access to a good education, with information that suggests he excelled at language arts.4
It is noted that around 574 he felt compelled to enter into the field of religion and resigned from his post within the
high office of the Prefect to establish various monasteries and then become a monk himself.5 One author notes that, "he gave his money away, turned his family home into a
