Robert Torricelli stepped down, and allowed the former three term Democratic Senator Frank Lautenberg take his place. Torricelli had been trailing in at least some polls, but it was corruption that actually led to his resignation and a subsequent dropping out of the race. For example, a Senate Ethics Committee chastised him for accepting gifts from David Chang, who pled guilty to illegally funneling contributions to Torricellis 1996 campaign (Tedeschi, 2002). It has been suggested that Doug Forrester, the Republican candidate, had asked him to resign. Of course, it was a move not meant to upset the race but merely to point out that the candidate was a crook. The request, if there was actually one, backfired. Lautenberg who took the place of the incumbent won by a comfortable margin. On election day, New Jersey was called early. There was no chatter about who might win. Forrester was in fact one of the few Republicans to lose that day, a day that was victorious for the GOP. Just a year after electing Democrat Jim McGreevey as governor of the Garden State New Jersey seems to be becoming decidedly more democratic, somewhat like New York once was. This is true even though New Jersey is a much more conservative state. Still, the proof is in the outcome. Interestingly, New York had elected Governor Pataki to another term as their Republican governor. Although many think of New York as being liberal, it is really only the city that has the liberal base. There are many conservative votes upstate and so Republican rule is not really all that surprising.
