the unfortunate reality is that most often these cases involve minorities - African Americans, women, children and/or teenagers, Latinos, etc. While regulations are in place which prohibit such activity, often these regulations are overlooked by authorities who are largely unaccountable. We cannot ignore this situation but must understand its pervasiveness in order to begin to define appropriate solutions. Police Brutality in the United States Police brutality is a serious concern in the United States (The Parents Against Police Brutality, 2003). But what is police brutality exactly? It is many things actually, including the excessive use of force by police officers to conduct unjustified acts such as shootings, beatings, chokings, and other rough treatment (Shielded from Justice: Police Brutality, 2003). In large part, the reason that police brutality exists in this country is often due to the very protective barriers which surround the officers, thereby making it extremely difficult to hold such officers accountable for their actions (Shielded from Justice: Police Brutality, 2003). In order to understand the extent of this problem and its impact upon our society, it is helpful to look at case studies in order to grasp the scope of how police brutality actually affects individuals (Shielded from Justice: Police Brutality, 2003).
