Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Pluto was discovered in 1930, by a man named Clyde Tombaugh in Flagstaff, Arizona. He did not name the planet,
though. That job was left to a young girl in England, who wanted to name it after the Roman god of the underworld (Pluto is out!, 2006).
Pluto is not alone in this world of the dwarf planet. There were 44 of them as of August, 2006 (Inman, 2006). In 2008, the
new name for Pluto is plutoid (Chang, 2008). There is only one other dwarf planet known as a plutoid, and that is another dwarf planet past the orbit of Neptune:
Eris. A third class of objects orbiting the sun includes asteroids, comets, and moons. They are referred to as solar system bodies (Inman, 2006). So what is it that makes
a planet a planet? An object in space orbits the sun, must be round in response to gravity, and it must be in charge of the area in its orbit.
It also needs to be able to absorb everything within its orbit. Pluto does not have the ability to do this. Instead of orbiting solely around the sun, it crosses
Neptunes orbit. So how round is round enough to be a planet? This is a question that will need to be clarified at a later date, according to experts
