The following brief literature review examines how advanced nursing practice nursing knowledge can be utilized to coordinate a patient relations program that is designed to meeting the needs of womens healthcare services. Mather (2003) based on her research, which has addressed how women perceive the birthing experience, discusses the ways in which consumerism, expectation and nursing care intersect. This insightful article offers insight for advanced nursing practice as to how this contemporary social phenomenon should be regarded, as well as offering useful information on the discrepancies between what women, as consumers, imagine and the actual reality of giving birth. In particular Mather reports on the experience of midwives who report that what women imagine, and its facsimile to the delivery room "reality" is a crucial factor in whether or not women regard their birthing experience as positive. This information suggests that a advanced practice nurse (APN) can facilitate customer satisfaction by including patient education in a patient relations program. On this topic, Behar-Horsenstein, et al (2005) conducted a study whose purpose was to determine the way in which patients perceive patient education efforts.
