Born of an illustrious family in the city of Elea in lower Italy around 510 BCE, Parmenides is considered to be the primary representative of the school of philosophy that draws its name from his home city, i.e. Eleatic (IEP, 2002). What is known of Parmenides philosophical work consists of a poem, "On Nature," of which only a hundred lines survive (Honderich, 1995). The following summation and analysis of Parmenides position in regards to the nature of the universe will demonstrate the holes in his philosophical model. On the other hand, this discussion will also demonstrate the various ways in which Parmenides was almost, but not quite, on the right track. For example, that his insistence that "something" could not come from "nothing" was an early way of stating physics Law of Conservation of Energy, which states that matter can neither be created or destroyed. In order to fully appreciate Parmenides position, it is helpful to see him in the context of his time in history. Background The earliest Greek philosophers, such as Anaximines and Pythagoras, recognized that things in the natural world change. They saw change all around them -- water became ice or steam, air became wind -- and they did not perceive this as a problem (Frost, 1962). However, later philosophers, as they pondered the nature of the universe, began to see the fact of change as a problem to be solved -- "What is it? How does it come about? Is there really change, or do we just imagine that things change?" (Frost,1962,p. 8). These questions and more demanded answers.
