                                                    Perhaps the best way to study such unwritten rules is to examine the close quarters of an elevator and the unwritten rules that accompany such travel.  	One can say  
                                                
                                                    that there are at least five major rules that people observe when they step onto an elevator. First, eye contact is a very big no-no. Secondly, conversation is muted or  
                                                
                                                    kept to short sentences. Then, there is the personal space issue. Other rules involve sneezing, scratching, personal hygiene matters and displays of affection. 	These rules may have a great deal  
                                                
                                                    to do with the close quarters one finds oneself in, in an elevator, even if there are only two people on it. It is a fact: there is no place  
                                                
                                                    to hide or run. The survival instinct, one might say, is still quite strong in most people. The fact that there is no where to go to get away from  
                                                
                                                    an odious or threatening person can add to the anxiety and discomfort of riding in a small box with a total stranger. 	Interestingly enough, through the use of surveillance cameras  
                                                
                                                    it can be said that many people, even when riding the elevator alone, still adhere to many of the unwritten rules. Many will still look up at the floor numbers  
                                                
                                                    above the door, or will look at the floor. Eye contact is not leveled at the door, or personal height levels. Nor do people tend to stand in the very  
                                                
                                                    middle of the compartment. Most tend to stand off to the side in the corner in a protective stance. Men tend to stand with their arms crossed defensively, or with  
                                                
                                                    their hands protectively covering their groin. Women tend to stand in the corner, arms crossed, lips drawn and eyes averted. Sometimes hands will be shoved into pockets as if they
