Attracting and retaining qualified employees is a formidable task regardless of the industry or the location. For hospitals in rural areas, however, this task becomes even more difficult. One of the most important components of this process is the provision of measures for in-house training. In-house training can meet both existing and anticipated employee training needs. There is, after all, a common perception that the higher a persons educational attainment the greater level of employment compensation they will ultimately receive. Spence (1973) proposes that employers rationally offer higher compensation to those workers who have completed a higher level of education. Cameron and Heckman (1993) confirm this correlation. The rural health care provider cannot always afford to pay the highest wages, however. They must, therefore, be prepared to supplement their staffs training as needed. An additional benefit of this approach as well, however, is that in-house training programs often offers incentives for employee recruitment and retention. The provision of in-house training programs can, however, take a variety of formats. By far the most appropriate of these formats is the outsourcing of our employee training needs to qualified and experienced educational providers. Todays workplace is characterized by an incontestable shortage of appropriately trained workers. While this shortage is evident in practically every arena of the work environment, it is particularly true in regard to the rural health care industry. The knowledge which is required for these jobs is something which changes on an almost daily basis.
