James Joyces story Araby is one of 15 that comprise his book Dubliners. In this work, the protagonist, an adolescent boy who is never named, experiences his first love: a girl known only as "Mangans sister."1 Like the boy, she is nameless; they could be any boy and girl in the world. He dreams about her, thinks about her and fantasizes constantly, but doesnt have the courage to speak to her. When he finally does talk to her, its a short exchange in which he tells her hes going to a fair, called Araby. "Ill bring you something," he says.2 The very name Araby conjures up images of Arabian nights, exotic places and great adventures, with the hero winning the beautiful girl. This is clearly the role the boy sees himself playing. But the reality is far different. For one thing, he gets to the bazaar only ten minutes before it closes, which gives him no time to do more than look around briefly.3 And what he sees is depressing: shut up booths, a few disinterested employees standing around talking, and most of all, shoddy junk for sale.4 Theres nothing of the wonders of the Orient here, just cheap wares that even he realizes are poor quality. The boys awakening to reality is a shock. He suddenly understands that he has built up an entire fantasy life based on nothing but what he hopes will happen. He has no way of knowing how the girl feels about him, because he hasnt talked to her. His hoped-for life is a fantasy, but the tacky bazaar is his reality.
