The Great Depression gained far more attention than did flamboyant criminals, as has been the case with the rapid rise of organized crime in Eastern Europe since the fall of communism.

protection" (Bell, 1992; p. 109). Newly-arriving immigrants of all origins are more economically stable than in the past, and the "political machines" of the cities largely have been dismantled.
Conditions that gave rise to the ability of the Mafia to gain control of markets key to its growth and success have changed in recent decades, and Mafia leaders failed
to plot a sustainable course. Though "Mafia" formerly was used to refer to all forms of organized crime in the US, that base has become far less influential.
Other forms of organized crime have taken its place, however. Both emanate from the same forms of social and individual choices and pressures. Characteristics and Incidents The most
flamboyant organized crime activities now occurring are in the nations of Eastern Europe, where decades of communism have eroded individuals ability to recognize their ability to control much of their
own destiny. Law frequently is something only to circumvent, and players in organized crime rings can do so with impunity in those nations where that attitude exists and political
corruption is seen as nothing more than the standard way of operating various government agencies. Most of the former Eastern Bloc nations were unable to make an immediate shift
from a command economy to a market one, even though most intended and strove to do so. Their economies were in shambles at the fall of communism, and the
dramatic public budget cuts were nearly immediate. The result has been that police effectiveness has been nearly negated, while many politicians and government officials accepted bribes to overlook illegal
