individual. This disorder is typically not permanent, but can last for months or years at a time, causing the individual and those in their circle a great deal of distress. Oppositional defiant disorder is defined as a pattern of hostile and defiant behavior that lasts for six months or longer (Oppositional Defiant Disorder, 2004). Furthermore, the condition is characterized by the inclusion of at least four of the following symptoms: loses temper, argues with adults, actively defies adults, deliberately annoys others, blames others for his/her mistakes and/or misbehavior, easily annoyed by others, often angry and resentful, often spiteful and vindictive (Oppositional Defiant Disorder, 2004). While children will typically exhibit some of these characteristics naturally, in the case of oppositional defiant disorder, these characteristics are observed to be significantly more evident than in the case of the "normal" child, to the point that the characteristic interferes with the childs relationships (Oppositional Defiant Disorder, 2004).
