the next, many elements remain the same, and seem to universally appear in the myths of all cultures. One such element is the hero, a figure intended to represent all the most virtuous and positive of a cultures values. Such a figure serves the role of a paragon or idol within the cultures myths, providing inspiration and an instructive example of what that culture believes to be positive, moral, and praise-worthy behavior. In order to gain a better understanding of how heroes serve the mythological function of fulfilling and representing cultural values, one might look at a common example of a classical hero: Odysseus, from Homers Odyssey. Odysseys is a hero, because he is courageous, charismatic, and agile in his thought and actions, as the following adventures prove. Odysseus can firstly be called a hero because he represents the Greek virtue of courageousness and bravery. He performs many courageous actions throughout the course of the story, but perhaps one of the most significant is when he takes on, nearly singlehandedly, all the suitors who have been freeloading in his home during his absence. In fact, during this passage, much is made of Odysseus bravery in challenging Antinous and the other suitors, who grossly outnumber him. Odysseus himself vows that he will fight "while Ive got arrows to defend me", committed to the courageous fulfillment of his honorable duty (Homer 2009, p. 533). This willingness to courageously push against boundaries was a hallmark of the Athenian character and would have been an important heroic quality for a Greek audience reading the Odyssey. Another manner in which Odysseus appears to be a strong literary hero is through his embodiment of the virtue of charisma.
