Because of Howie Mandel and Monk, OCD has come out into the open. Mandell has a germ phobia and Monk had to have everything sterile and he also had to touch each of the parking meters. This is a mental illness that can be somewhat controlled with medication and therapy. The article reviewed reported a pilot study on Internet-based cognitive-behavior therapy for obsessive compulsive patients. As with previous studies involving computers, this one had very positive results. Cognitive behavior therapy has been delivered via the Internet for other disorders, such as other anxiety disorders. If it is successful for OCD, it would provide another option for patients who are unable to see a counselor face-to-face. Internet-Based Therapy The article by Andersson et al. (2011) reported a research study that included the use of Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy for obsessive-compulsive patients. Cognitive behavior therapy is commonly used with OCD patients. The authors proposed that if therapists were not available, one option would be to use Internet based therapy. Obsessive compulsive disorder is a chronic disorder that is characterized by obsessions, i.e., thoughts, and/or compulsions, acts that must be done. The acts become rituals. Thoughts could be about fear of germs or dirt and compulsions that follow could be washing ones hands every five minutes. It is estimated that between 2 and 3 percent of the population will suffer from OCD during their lifetime and they will deal with it for most of their lives.
