long suppressed the ability of women to gain their own autonomy. Secrets is one such story that reflects the theme of womens autonomy. Written by Somalian author Nuruddin Farah, this story features the character Sholoongo, who is presented first as a young girl and then as a woman. The character of Sholoongo is one that is a complex mixture of victim and heroine, and thus extremely compelling to readers. The fact that Sholoongo is determined to realize her goals and not be swayed by the opinions of others reveals her high regard for autonomy. This story is based on the childhood friendship/sexual relationship of Sholoongo and the younger Kalaman. He promises her a child one day and much to his surprise, years later Sholoongo comes back to collect on that promise. In the process, she is subjected to the unkind perceptions of the villagers and Kalamans family, but her ability to live her life irrespective of their opinions provides important insight into her autonomous nature. Having been gone from the village for so many years, Sholoongo has developed her own identity - which in turn provided her with autonomy. Sholoongo is a woman transformed. She had gone to live in America and had long assumed that her "pact" with Kalaman would be honored. Perhaps by American standards she was not autonomous based upon her apparent reliance on Kalaman and her strong desire for a child and traditional life, but by the standards of her society she was extremely independent.
