Even though
there have been a number of significant changes and developments in the formation and evolution of English law since the Norman conquest, it is not necessarily the case that such
changes came out specifically as a result of Norman policies, particularly in view of the fact that those legal systems which already existed in English prior to the reign of
William I did not simply disappear after the Norman invasion, but in many cases survived in amended forms.
Before the Norman conquest, it could be asserted that there was no unified code of common
law in England, since the various legal systems which were extant at the time depended primarily on regionalism and the influence of particular cultures in those regions. In general, English
law was governed either by the Mercian, Saxon or Danish legal codes, as well as the continuing influence of the Roman invasion, and it was not until well after Williams
reign that these were amalgamated along with Norman influences into what could be seen as the forerunner of the modern common law.
It is true, however, that the social
and political effects of the Norman victory had far-reaching consequences for the government and cultural development of the country: since virtually all of those Anglo-Saxons who had not been killed
