Dorothy Rabinowitz the reader is introduced to amazing stories of supposed crimes that never really occurred. It is a work that details particular cases in the country during the 1990s, cases involving sexual abuse, that have slowly come out into the light as having been false. The following paper examines a few of these cases and provides a review of the book. No Crueler Tyrannies In this work the thesis of the work appears to be that when a case gets attention, especially sexual abuse cases, many people will become so confused and worried that they will become part of a mob mentality, much like Salem witch trials, and work together to accuse someone and put them away. It also seems to be arguing that our court systems and investigation systems, along with child protective services, are clearly not doing their job and are part of the problem. One of the biggest cases in the book is a case that is brought up in every other chapter, with other smaller cases in between. The case involves a day care center and the Amirault family. This particular day care center was sought out for being a very good center until, it seems, one young boy got his underwear changed by Gerald Amirault and the mother began to notice the boy was now wetting his pants. This led to the belief that the boy was sexually abused, and complaints were filed. Suddenly there were a lot of other accusations until it got so ridiculous that accusations of rape with knives (though no wounds were ever found) were being presented.
