3 million people in Nigeria have AIDS (Hargreaves, 2002). It is a difficult topic to discuss because of the taboos exist relative to talking about sex or sexuality (Hudson, 2005).
Large numbers of people still believe that using condoms is bad and they wont prevent AIDS anyway (Hudson, 2005). These people are highly influenced by many religious leaders (Hudson, 2005).
However, that situation is finally beginning to change; the Nigerian National Action Committee on AIDS (NACA) very recently announced that 200 million condoms have been sold over the last four
years (Reproductive Health Matters, 2006). Importantly, this same group estimates that 83 percent of "commercial sex workers now use or insist on the use of condoms" (Reproductive Health Matters, 2006,
p. 222). Nigeria has a very poor system of public health care (Hargreaves, 2002). In fact, life expectancy is a mere 50.1 years with an infant mortality rate of 112
per 1,000 live births (Hargreaves, 2002). Using any of the many development index, Nigeria always falls last or close to the bottom (Hargreaves, 2002). Malaria is a big killer in
this country (Hargreaves, 2002). Tuberculosis is another one (Hargreaves, 2002). It has to do with a lack of inoculations against so many of the common diseases (Hargreaves, 2002). For this
same reason, children contract and die from a number of diseases, such as measles and meningitis (Hargreaves, 2002) and illnesses, such as diarrhea, acute respiratory infections, bronchopneumonia, and whooping cough
